I love when a crafter decides to “dare to wear” a DIY project. Great job! I am going to do this today!
So today I wore this detached collar to school. These collars are actually trending right now in the fashion world and I decided to follow the collar craze! I pretty much just bought a bunch of men’s shirts from goodwill for $4 apiece and snipped off the collars. I got some compliments, some questions, and definitely some weird looks.
Classmate: “Is your collar…floating?”
Me: “HAHA yeah totally.”
In Latin class
Teacher: “Are you wearing just a collar?”
Me: “Yep!”
“Funny, those used to be ‘in’ back then.”
“Really??”
So I googled ‘detachable collar history’ and turns out it was really popular in the 1800s and early 1900s. Someone’s wife decided to cut off her husband’s collars because she got tired of washing the whole shirt when only his collar got dirty. People started ordering collars and they would deliver them. And then the supposed first sweat shop was born. Pretty cool, huh? I think it’s super awesome because that just goes to show how fashion repeats and recycles itself.
Just a little food for thought.

DIY Free Pattern for Burly Spun Grey Owl Cowl. Done on 10mm/or size 15 needles (yeah! Should go super fast). A good conversion chart for needle sizes and yarn weight is here. Free pattern from Loopknitlounge here. *I only knit what I can’t buy or afford to buy. I guess this applies to everything I craft.

JanDIY : Create Valentine’s Dishes With Edible Paint

For a bridal shower or any special dinner, try decorating plain dishes with icing. Designs will be perfectly edible, and if you make a mistake while painting, just lick it off and start over. (Don’t tell anyone your tongue made contact with their plate.)

To make this “paint,” I mixed 3 tablespoons of powdered sugar, 1 teaspoon of water, and 2 drops of liquid food coloring. Apply with a paintbrush. If needed, run your fingernail around any wiggly edges to smooth them out before they dry.

DIY Moschino Inspired Gold Safety Pin Collar. Unfortunately the tutorial has been deleted by Brook & Lyn, but it’s pretty self explanatory. I know she used small gold safety pins going in one direction and then overlapping them with pins going in the other direction. You can see this and lots of other safety pin “inspiration” projects at Refinery 29 here.
